Playdough

1 Cup plain all purpose flour

1/2 Cup of salt

2 tablespoons of cream of tartar

2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

1 cup of water with food colouring added

Put all the ingredients into a large saucepan, stir over a medium/low heat until the mixture is thickened. Wait until dough is cooled, mould into a ball and then put into an air tight container or plastic bag with no holes.

Paper Mache Bowls

Materials

Plastic bowl, Petroleum Jelly (nappy cream), Newspaper, Flour, water.

  1. Mix one cup of flour and water together to make the glue.
  2. Tear lots of strips of newspaper, 2cm by 7cm approx.
  3. Turn plastic bowl upside down and cover in petroleum jelly (this prevents the paper mache sticking to the bowl).
  4. Start sticking layers of paper onto the bowl, finish when there is about 3 - 4 layers of paper mache all over the bowl.
  5. Leave to dry for a few days.
  6. Apply paint, be as creative as you want, stripes, spots, pictures.
These bowls are great for festivals, I have put cinnamon sticks in the bowl at Christmas and Easter eggs (of course home made!) at Easter.

Fairy wand

  1. Draw a star on a piece of card and cut it out, then lay it onto another piece of card and draw it twice, you should now have a template and 2 stars.
  2. Cut out the stars . Then cut 10 lengths of ribbon about 4 inches long.
  3. Apply glue to the inside (non decorated side) of the star and let  it dry for a few seconds.
  4. Carefully lay the straw and the pieces of ribbon on the glue and put the other star to form a kind of sandwich with the straw and ribbons inside.
  5. Apply a weight  (a directory or heavy book) to enable all the materials to bind together for a short while.
  6. Once dry, decorate both sides with paint, glitter, sequins or what ever you have in the cupboard.

Sailing boat

Materials

1 flat bottomed plastic tub (margarine tub etc),small amount of play dough or plasticine, a straw, coloured paper.

  1. Cut out a small sail out of the coloured paper.
  2. Attach to the straw.
  3. Roll the play dough or plastcine into a small ball and place into middle  of the tub.
  4. Push straw into playdough, plasticine.

Your boat is now ready to sail! Ask your child to blow on the sail and mention different parts of the boat such as mast, sail and the shape, why does it float ?
